What is the JSE?
The Jewish Student Experience at UW provides opportunities for all Jewish students at University of Washington to engage timeless traditions in a modern world. The JSE is a non-profit, campus-based RSO (registered student organization of UW) dedicated to extending Jewish learning opportunities to the broadest spectrum of Jewish students at the University of Washington. Through social events, lively classes and discussions, transformative trips, and other programming, our goal is to allow students to experience Judaism in a fun as well as meaningful way. Further, we encourage the development of a vibrant, tolerant campus community in which every Jew is welcomed and valued.
The JSE recognizes that Jewish growth is a perpetual process, and that each student, emerging from his or her unique Jewish background, must develop in his or her own way. We are committed to offering guidance and opportunities at each step of a student’s very personal Jewish journey.
Who we are
Rabbi Aaron & Sara Steinfeld bring their love for Jewish students & Jewish learning to what they do best: teach, host, and inspire. Since their move to Seattle, they’ve been teaching classes, running trips, hosting Shabbat meals, and giving Jewish knowledge and meaning (and good homemade food) to the lives of many Jewish students. Their “open door policy”, warm love of all Jews, and their two adorable, outgoing toddlers, combine to make theirs a home away from home for hundreds of students.
More about us…(If you really want to know…)
Rabbi Aaron enjoys world travelling (ran out of pages in his passport…), sports (huge fan of the J-E-T-S, the Yankees…and the Huskies
) , loves playing with his two energetic toddler boys, and of course, meeting new students & getting to know them! He is well-known at UW for his friendly personality, subtle sense of humor (don’t believe everything he says!), and amazing ice cream desserts.
Born & raised in New York City, Sara decided early on that she did NOT want her kids to be New Yorkers. After high school, she devoted a year to intensive Jewish learning in Israel, then headed to Moscow for three months of volunteer work with Jewish high school students. Sara received her BA in Liberal Arts from Thomas Edison State College, with a focus on Psychology and Literature. Over the years, she has done volunteer work with dysfunctional families, autistic children, and Russian-Jewish immigrants, as well as managed a dental clinic in Israel for low-income families. Sara loves spending time hugging, dancing, & singing with Yaakov and Elazar (both proudly born in Israel). She enjoys reading (ok, is a bit obsessed with books), anything art, music (with kinda old-school taste), creative writing, and being near the ocean. Sara loves talking with students (they say you can talk to her about anything), opening her home & heart to them, and feeding them!
